UBC - Medical School Interview
I'm updating again - I know, it's insane.
First of all, there's been a lot of interest surrounding my medical school interview, so I thought that I'd give you all a little update on how it went.
So, I stayed at Jeanine's the night before (shout out to the Ball Family!) so that I didn't have to wake up too early. After picking up Rachel (who also had her interview the same day and time) we went to the BEAUTIFUL new Life Sciences Building at UBC to sign in. There was a lot of tension in the air, but there were also current medical school students there to keep us happy and less stressed. They told us about their interview experiences etc. Everyone was very dressed up. There was a little too much black for my tastes so I wore turquoise:

Anyhow, so once I was called in (by the doctor who was interviewing me), I was led into a little room, much like the breakout rooms of the DSB building at UVIC. There were two other interviewers, an English Professor (male), and a Real Estate Agent (female). The Doctor was also female, and practices in the Kootenays. Everyone was really nice, and the Doctor stressed that it was very casual and not to be stressed.
Weirdly, it turned out that the Doctor who interviewed me is a proud owner of a tandem and rides on the back with her husband (weird).
So, each of the three interviewers took turns asking questions, such as:
- Why do you want to be a doctor?
- Why not another health profession instead?
- What skills does a doctor need?
- Name some instances when you showed these skills?
- Talk about your volunteer work, and how you got involved?
- What was the most meaningful volunteer experience you had and how did it affect you?
- What does integrity mean to you?
- Explain to us (lay people) your research at UBC
- When have you demonstrated integrity?
- When has someone failed to show integrity and it affected you?
- Talk about a social problem (locally, regionally, or globally)
- Talk about personal experience that you have with a social problem
- Talk about honesty and truth telling in medicine and what it means to you
- Do you have any questions for us?
I was able to talk a lot about my experiences with the tandem and at Via Libre in Lima. They seemed very interested and impressed. I feel that I could have talked forever, so I might of rambled a little at some points, but they didn't seem to mind. At the end I asked them if they had any advice for me, and they all had very interesting things to say. The professor said to write down why I wanted to be a doctor and put it away somewhere, and take it out and read it when I want to quit. The Real Estate Agent said to make sure that I stay well rounded and not become ONLY a doctor. She has had a bad experience with a very one dimensional doctor. Finally the doctor said that I should make sure that I really love it, b/c it's a super hard profession. That concluded the interview, it was 45 min long.
It was a very positive experience, and they told me that I had done a good job, which I thought was positive. My interviewers were all very nice and friendly and non-threatening. It's great to have it done now. This waiting thing is really lame though. I'll know if I'm accepted by May 15th.
Now I can read fiction and not about what a crappy state our health care system is in... not that they asked me about the health care system at all!!!

These are some pretty Lacoste shoes that I saw in Montreal. While they are fabulous, $200 is way too much to spend on shoes.

Those Lacoste shoes are sweet; $200 is not too much. Always buy quality, especially when buying shoes.

way to go lisa. sounds to me like you aced it! I can only hope I figure out how to handle an interview if I ever make it there!

Did you know that there is a museum dedicated to shoes in Toronto… with more than 10,000 pairs, including pre-Columbian sacrificial boots, samurai bear fur shoes and Australian aboriginal human hair slippers?

That's right! I actually went into that shoe museum in Toronto this summer...definitely worth visiting for shoe lovers.
