My First Design (Finished Object!)

Here they are - I'll call them 'Blood and Lymphatics Cabled Mittens' because I knit them during our Blood and Lymphatics block. My very own pattern, and I'm quite proud. I have long and skinny hands, so these may be the only mittens that have ever fit me quite right.

Year 2

So, summer is over, and I'm back in the swing of things again.

Here are some things that are currently making me happy:

1) We bought a condo. Yup, we are officially yuppies. We live at Broadway and Manitoba which is very convenient for my commute to VGH for school. Open invitation to anyone who is in town. Come on by! (see #2 for incentive)

2) Espresso

The Gaggia Titanium - Yumm.

3) I've recently ordered a new stethoscope, and I'm quite excited about it. Alistair is excited that it's navy blue:

Littman Cardiology III

4) HAZEL! She's getting bigger and feistier every day.

RRRrroar

5) Knitting - An enjoyable way to sit through lectures. I've got a couple of projects on the go, but no finished ones to report on yet...

6) Shoes (Boots) of the post
There's some question of whether boots are in fact a subcategory of shoes, but I think it has been settled that shoes aren't allowed to have an upper that goes above the ankle. What are high tops then? Please weigh in on this subject.

Alistair surprised me with these awesome boots last year - they're been incredibly useful (and warm!)

I also somehow got roped into biking again this year. I raced for the Giant Bicycles Canada Team, and had a blast with an awesome group of girls. We have a blog and a website for you to peruse at will.

That's all - now back to studying!

Happiness and Relief

So, the wait is over. It was extended an extra three weeks, but now it's finally over.

For those of you who are in the dark, the wait I am speaking of is the wait to hear about acceptance/refusal from UBC medical school (my second time applying).

The day of reckoning was to be the 15th of May, the day that they notify you of your status: accepted, refused, or waitlisted. My status was updated to 'WAITLISTED'.

Waitlisted is much better than being refused outright, but it's considerably more stressful. Waitlisted candidates are not given any indication of the number of people that are waitlisted, nor are they given their position on the waitlist.

After the first round of offers are accepted or rejected (deadline May 31st), the waitlist starts moving. I was told my the Admissions Office that it would likely begin June 6th.

June 6th came and went with no change of my waitlisted status. And then finally, June 7th - after returning from a lovely time at Atwater Market with Alistair and Anita - the news came. OFFER!

So it's final. I've been accepted to the Vancouver-Fraser Site of UBC Faculy of Medicine.

It's nice to have firm plans for next year. Now I'm going to enjoy the rest of the summer!

False alarm

It wasn't Norwalk after all - it was this:

Cryptosporidium parvum

The centre for disease control describes the symptoms:

"The most common symptom of cryptosporidiosis is watery diarrhea. Other symptoms include:

    * Dehydration
* Weight loss
* Stomach cramps or pain
* Fever
* Nausea
* Vomiting

In persons with healthy immune systems, symptoms usually last about 1 to 2 weeks. The symptoms may go in cycles in which you may seem to get better for a few days, then feel worse again before the illness ends."

This was the worst part - because whenever I thought I was better... WHAM! back to the beginning (see top of symptoms)

Where did I get this disease that has only infected hundreds of people in the past few years (this was the first case my doctor had seen!)?

lets see if we can connect the dots...

Scary scary scary

On the way back to Costa Mesa after a somewhat (read: very) unsuccessful weekend of racing, the team stopped at a strip mall to pick up some eats for the drive. I opted for "gourmet" pizza, at Redbrick Pizza.

As soon as I walked into the place I was completely taken aback. Along the wall, the booths in which families are supposed to enjoy their family dinners together were lined with... you guessed it - HDTVs, with full digital cable including the remote.

what is our civilization coming to?

In fact, while I was waiting for my order, another family completely ignored their order being called - they were far too wrapped up in their program.

After I finished my meal, I turned over the box, and along with their website was written this:

Deuteronomy 31:6

Which is the verse: "Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."

While it is a rather benign and non-confrontational Bible verse, I thought it odd that it would be on the bottom of my pizza box.

Anything is possible in the U. S. of A.

Shoes of the post:

I just bought these shoes from a guy in Redlands who sponsors women cyclists. He is a personal sponsor of one of my teammates and he got me these shoes for cost (he works for the company, five.ten)!

McLane Classic (How I learned to stop worrying and love the NRC series)

This weekend was my first weekend of racing of the year: first NRC ever, first time racing for a pro team, first race in California. I had no idea what I was in for (it wasn’t as bad as I thought
it would be).

The weekend started with a technical crit – what a great way to kick off the season (note sarcasm). There was a little inflated archway about halfway through the course that we all had to squeeze our way through – this caused an amazing amount of havoc. There were crashes every few laps as someone inevitably got squeezed out going through the archway. Thankfully I spent the majority of the race near the front, and managed to avoid the majority of the crashes. My legs felt great and I was able to go with some moves, and even got my name over the loudspeaker twice!

Sadly though the fun came to an end with three laps to go. I wasn’t able to avoid the last crash, and went down (not hard though, but enough to scrape my shifter). No free laps after 5 to go – so I chased for about half a lap, but couldn’t regain contact. Phlllt. Kudos to Nicky Wangsgard for the 6th place finish. She’s quick!

I was happy to get one race under my belt – it gave me some confidence in my fitness and got me pumped for the road race the following day. Road races are better than crits anyway…

So, the following day we shipped out to the boonies for a 77mi (115km) road race. The terrain wasn’t super challenging. Rolling hills (read: no hills) and a fair bit of wind. Our team’s strategy was to make sure we had someone in the break if one went – easier said than done. At first it looked like it would all stay together. A few dangerous moves went up the road, but were quickly reeled back. We decided not to be overly zealous with following moves – there were only four of us and the other big teams had a many more riders. We decided to stay vigilant at the front. Finally something dangerous stuck. Nicky attacked, and when that was reeled back, I countered hard, and managed to bridge up to the break – a serious bit of effort that was well worth it. My teammates (Nicky Molly and Miranda) in the bunch policed the field and waited for opportunities to get another of us to the break but it was not to be. I was the only CPT-Colnago rider in a break of 12 including two Lipton girls, two Colavita-Quark girls, and a spattering of other teams, including
fellow Canadians Erinne Willock of Webcor, and Laura Yoisten of Victory Brewing.

The break worked well togther and we managed to keep a gap of about a minute on the field. I was really surprised that no attacks were launched from the break until about a km to go when Erinne Willock initiated the sprint. I followed Laura, but Dotsie Cowden and Laura Van Gilder attacked from the other side with T-Mobile rider Kim Anderson closely in tow. I passed Erinne and Laura Yoisten and grabbed fourth. Just off the podium but an amazing result for me in my first NRC road race.

I’ve left room for improvement…

In other news, today we had a school visit! We chatted with two grade four classes about pro bike racing and what it's all about. Fun times for everyone.

Coolest Thing Ever

A while back, a catalogue came to our house. A magnificent catalogue filled with amazing things that no one needs. The catalogue in question is distributed by Hammacher Schlemmer. I don't know anything about this company except that it sure distributes cool junk.

One particular thing caught my interest:

he must be going fast, look at his tie!

Yes folks, it's the "Levitating Hover Scooter"

Hailed by the New York Times as "miniature flying saucer with handlebars" this amazing machine can transport a single rider up to 15mph on flat and slightly inclined surfaces for up to 1 hour on a full tank of unleaded gasoline. Stopping is apparently 'easy' and requires the distance of 20ft.

What would you pay for this experience?

Try $16,999.95

And now: SHOES OF THE POST

Moulded Mole, UNDERDOGMA

friendly furry slippers - they're made from moles!
