First, sorry for the live-music review, but I figure this is the most interesting thing that is happening (or has happened) right now.
Montreal has a ridiculous amount of music happening. The local indie venues are the place to be for the scenesters. But last night, one of Canada's hot non-Montreal indie rock bands was in Montreal. The New Pornographers came to town with Destroyer and Immaculate Machine (from Victoria!) and played at La Tulipe.
I have a bit of a connection with Immaculate Machine: One of their members, Brooke Gallupe, hosted the show, "Pardon My French," that, for about a year or so, was on CFUV right before Soundcheck. I saw them play once in Victoria at Lucky Bar and I was definitely impressed. Since then they've appeared (at least) twice on CBC radio 3's podcast and have also been signed to Mint Records. They were the first band last night and they played a really good 30 minute set. I definitely recommend grabbing some of their mp3s of their site or New Music Canada. They are really young and I don't doubt that they will do some good things over the next few years. The band does some great things with just a keyboard, guitar and drums without being over the top.
The second band, Destroyer, was terrible. It's harsh but I hated them. They paid no attention to the crowd and were more pre-occupied with hearing themselves in their monitors than putting on a performance for the crowd. Lisa's comment is that the lead singer's voice is really annoying and he has pretentious lyrics. I have since heard that the lead singer has been a big part of the New Pornographers so maybe their spot on the tour was a bit of nepotism (as was Immaculate Machine).
The New Pornographers were great. Very good. Neko Case was worth hearing and I would definitely recommend checking them out.
Alright, boring I know.

Hey, was I with you when we saw IM? I recall seeing a band open for someone, I think, at Lucky a couple years ago that you mentioned knowing. I recall being impressed. Good for them.

Funny thing. I got a ride to an XC mountain bike race on Saturday and the guy driving (from San Fran) was playing the New Pornographers the whole way to the race. Thought it was a funny coincidence since I had just seen your post.

Sorry--that first post (the ratio thing) wasn't meant to be anonymous and creepy. Stumbled across yr blog by accident. I used to race when I was out in Victoria/Vancouver. We've crossed paths, etc. My roommate is Jesse Jackson, who I believe went to high school with you and raced a bit.
